D.C. United took the term "hard-fought point" to a whole new level on Sunday night.
The Black-and-Red earned a 0-0 draw against New York City FC at Audi Field despite failing to register a single shot, let alone an effort on target.
D.C. became just the second team in history to complete an MLS match without a single shot attempt, and the first to earn a point while doing so.
"Overall I'm pleased that we were able to get something out of tonight and [NYCFC] are a very good team... I'm looking at the stat sheet now and it's not real flattering but that's OK," said D.C. head coach Ben Olsen after the match.
The 2017 New England Revolution were the other team to not attempt a shot. It didn't end well for them, when they lost 7-0 at Atlanta United on Sept. 13 of that year after having two men sent off before halftime. Jay Heaps was fired as Revs manager following the match.
NYCFC finished with 19 shots and four efforts on target as their three-match winning streak was snapped. D.C. have now earned four points from their last two matches despite being outshot 36-5 over 180 minutes.
