Acevedo finally joins NYCFC after COVID-19 travel restrictions eased

Nicolas Acevedo arrives at NYCFC

After an extended delay because of the coronavirus pandemic, Nicolas Acevedo has finally been able to join his New York City FC teammates at training.

The 21-year-old Uruguayan midfielder arrived in New York late last week and was tested for two straight days according to the club. When those tests came back negative, Acevedo was cleared to train. He met up with teammates at the club’s training facility and joined them on the field Monday.

NYCFC signed Acevedo from Uruguayan-based Liverpool FC using allocation money March 2, but has been stuck in his hometown of Montevideo due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

The defensive midfielder, who made 36 first team appearances, has been capped 17 times by the Uruguayan U-20 team and seven with the U-23 national team. He was named “Joven Talento del 2019” by the Uruguayan Football Association, the best U-21 player in the domestic league.

NYCFC are set to depart for the MLS is Back Tournament Saturday ahead of a friendly against FC Dallas scheduled for July 4.
