Have the LA Galaxy already identified a Designated Player replacement to fill the void of Landon Donovan?
According to reports from several US-based soccer outlets, the reigning MLS Cup champs have their sights set on legendary Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to occupy the third and final Designated Player slot available to the team.
ESPNFC.com cited "sources" claiming the deal being discussed is an 18-month contract that would begin in the summer of 2015. The LA Times later appeared to confirm the news, citing "a Galaxy official" and adding that the deal is to be announced sometime this week.
The 34-year-old Gerrard announced on Saturday that he would be heading to the USA after the end of the current English Premier League season, but that no deal was reached with any specific club.
"I'll be going to play in America. But I'm not over the line with any team just yet," he told Liverpool TV on Saturday. I'm close and as soon as I know, I'll make the announcement."
Gerrard has also previously been linked to the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC.
The LA Galaxy have an open DP slot after Donovan's retirement following the conclusion of the 2014 MLS season. Reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player Robbie Keane and USMNT defender Omar Gonzalez occupy the other two slots.
