Toronto FC academy players celebrate a goal

If Toronto FC fans are worried about their team’s current struggles, just wait a few years.

TFC’s U-12 squad posted an eye-popping result Friday at the Arousa Futbol 7 tournament in Vilagarcia de Arousa, Spain, playing Barcelona to a 2-2 result, the Canadian Press reported. They also beat Spanish side ED Xuventu Oroso 5-0.

Nakye Greenidge-Duncan and Stefano Capano bagged the memorable goals for Toronto in what was the second of two 30-minute, seven-on-seven games on smaller fields with smaller goals.

Capano also scored two goals against Xuventu, with the rest of the goals coming from Luca Accettola, Ifeoluwa Adenuga and Charlie Bontis.

Gianni Cimini’s youngsters now sit atop Group C after the first day of the 20-team tournament that they qualified for by winning the inaugural U-12 tournament from Generation adidas Cup last month in Frisco, Texas. They’ll face Ajax and Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday.
