Fans in Toronto will get to see even more big names at BMO Field come May 27.
On Wednesday, Toronto FC announced that the club will host a friendly match against Barclays Premier League club Manchester City FC on May 27 (7:30 pm ET). City will be just three days removed from the Premier League season, with their final game scheduled for May 24 vs. Southampton.
“We are very excited to play Manchester City at BMO Field this season. Hosting a club like Manchester City is a great opportunity for our players to compete against one of the biggest clubs in the world,” general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “In addition to our home opener on May 10, the Amway Canadian Championship and a number of home matches through the spring and summer, BMO Field will also play host to the CONCACAF Gold Cup, giving fans an exciting summer of soccer in Toronto.”
Ferran Soriano, chief executive of Manchester City FC, said: “We are very excited about the game against Toronto FC. We know from our visit to Vancouver in 2011 the passion for the Club which exists in Canada. We have a very active supporters’ group in Toronto, and are looking forward to bringing our team to showcase their talents to our fans there.”
Manchester City is regarded as one of the top teams in England having won four First Division/Premier League titles, most recently during the 2013-14 season. In addition, the club has won five FA Cups, three Football League Cups, four FA Community Shield’s and one UEFA Cup Winners Cup. Currently, Manchester City sits second in the Barclays Premier League, trailing leaders, Chelsea. The club is led by manager Manuel Pellegrini and a roster featuring Argentine international Sergio Agüero, Spanish international David Silva, captain and Belgian international Vincent Kompany, and England’s starting goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Manchester City is also the parent club of MLS expansion side New York City FC.
