With a win or draw on Wednesday night against the New York Red Bulls (7 pm ET; TSN in Canada, MLS LIVE in US), Toronto FC will finally get into the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.
As most of you know by now, it has been a long wait for the oft-beleaguered club.
Since their expansion into the league, Toronto have had few moments of happiness.
There was, of course, their first-ever goal, their many Canadian Championship wins, a CONCACAF Champions League run back in 2012 and...not much else. Especially in MLS.
Just for a little reference, TFC did not score a goal in their first four games in MLS. Also, Sebastian Giovinco is already their second-leading goalscorer of all-time and he's not even through a full season yet.
So just how bad has it been for Canada's first MLS team over the years? Check out the table below.
Toronto FC through the years | ||||
Year | Pts. | Place in East | Pts. out of playoffs | Season note |
2007 | 25 | 7 (of 7) | 15 | 894 min. w/o a goal (longest streak ever) |
2008 | 35 | 7 (of 7) | 4 | Allowed 2nd fewest goals at home |
2009 | 39 | 5 (of 7) | 1 | Lost on final day w/shot at playoffs |
2010 | 35 | 5 (of 8) | 11 | Local legend Dwayne De Rosario scored 15 goals |
2011 | 33 | 8 (of 9) | 13 | Worst goal differential in league |
2012 | 23 | 10 (of 10) | 30 | T-4th fewest wins of all-time |
2013 | 29 | 9 (of 10) | 20 | Went winless in 9 straight home games |
2014 | 41 | 7 (of 10) | 8 | Won 2 of last 13 games |
With a win against the Red Bulls, Toronto FC will not only win four MLS games in a row for the first time in their history, but they will also put an end to much of their anguish.
