The Timbers cannot host MLS Cup because they registered an inferior regular season record compared to both Eastern Conference Championship teams. The New York Red Bulls registered seven more points (60 points vs. Portland's 53) and Columbus Crew SC (also with 53 points) hold the goal differential tiebreaker (+5 vs. Portland's +2).
