While reports have emerged recently that Jozy Altidore could be on the move to MLS from English Premier League side Sunderland, there's still no deal in place.
The club's manager, Gus Poyet, went on the record about Altidore's situation on Friday: "They know more in America than me," The Guardian reported him as saying. "The agent was coming over two or three months ago but, since then, nothing."
While Poyet's remarks seemingly throw cold water on the rumors, The Guardian article does state that "Poyet suggested it may be nearer the end of the month before any move occurs" and that the manager "hopes to replace Altidore with a more prolific finisher in the next three weeks."
The winter European transfer window that opened on January 3 is scheduled to close on February 2.
ESPN's Taylor Twellman originally pointed to Toronto FC, Portland Timbers and New York Red Bulls as the potential MLS suitors. However, a Thursday report on ESPNFC.com indicates the Red Bulls have pulled out of the running for their former striker.
Still, despite all the speculation, Poyet claimed no offer has been made to Sunderland at this point.
“Officially there has been no approach for any of our players so we need to wait," he said. "But with Jozy things are clear – we talk together a lot and we are both very clear on what the future should bring.”
