Lema (pictured above, left) joined Portuguese side Benefica in 2018, but never broke in as a regular at the club, spending stints on loan with Uruguayan outfit Penarol and, most recently, Newell's Old Boys in Argentina. The 30-year-old originally signed a five-year contract with Benfica, but these recent developments suggest the club is looking for a suitor, with NYCFC appearing to emerge as a potential MLS destination.
Lema is an imposing physical presence, standing at 6-foot-3, and has shown a knack for scoring goals from his center back spot, racking up 16 during his stint with Argentine side Belgrano from 2014-2018 and another seven across his 35 matches on loan with Penarol and Newell's Old Boys.
