An attempt from the New York Red Bulls to strengthen their striker corps has been rebuffed, according to a report from the Peterborough Telegraph that says a £4 million bid for Peterborough United star Ivan Toney was rejected.
Toney, who’s bounced around various levels of England’s soccer pyramid since turning pro with Northampton Town in 2012, is coming off a person-best season in League One (third division). The 24-year-old has scored 26 goals and supplied seven assists across 39 appearances in all competitions.
That return rate, according to Peterborough director of football Barry Fry, warrants a larger transfer fee: “New York Red Bulls have plenty of money, but they didn’t offer us anywhere near enough for Ivan. It was £4 million with several add ons, but we will get bigger offers than that once our 2019-20 season comes to an end.”
The global transfer market will be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with MLS clubs potentially in a position to find summertime deals. RBNY could also use some reinforcements up top, with Brian White and Tom Barlow, two products of college soccer, the likeliest options. They’ve combined for 13 goals and two assists, while Danish teenager Mathias Jorgensen is also on the roster after now-LAFC striker Bradley Wright-Phillips wasn't re-signed.
As for Toney, he previously signed for Newcastle United in 2015. Several loans followed, including a pair each at Barnsley and Shrewsbury Town, and Toney has also reportedly been linked to Scottish clubs Celtic and Rangers.
