NBA star Kevin Durant has had his eye on MLS for some time. According to a Sports Business Journal report, he has his team.
The two-time NBA champion has purchased a minority stake in the Philadelphia Union, according to SBJ's Mark Burns, estimated to be between 1-5%. This news comes six months after the Union confirmed a meeting with Durant and his Thirty Five Ventures investment company.
In October 2019, Durant was linked with interest in D.C. United and according to Burns, he twice attempted to buy a stake in that club.
The 31-year-old Durant joins other current and former high-profile athletes who have become investors in MLS clubs: Houston Rockets star James Harden recently became a member of the Houston Dynamo ownership group, while Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife, Grammy-winning musician Ciara, invested in the Seattle Sounders. Magic Johnson, Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra are part of the LAFC ownership group.
The list of celebrity MLS owners includes Austin FC's Matthew McConaughey, LAFC's Will Ferrell and Seattle hip-hop artist Macklemore.
