Manchester United and Argentina national team goalkeeper Sergio Romero is gunning for a move to Major League Soccer, according to a report from England's Daily Mail.
Romero, who’s been with the Premier League side since 2015, was reportedly looking for a move to Everton as Deadline Day wrapped up in England. But the Toffees instead acquired Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen on loan as a backup to England national team goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, so the shift never materialized.
Another layer is where Romero falls into the Manchester United pecking order. Spain national team goalkeeper David de Gea is their No. 1, while Dean Henderson appears to have seized the backup role after spending last season on loan at fellow Premier League side Sheffield United.
That all leaves Romero reportedly seeking an exit, and the MLS Secondary Transfer Window notably stays open through Oct. 29 for transfers, trades and other player signings. Acquiring Romero permanently could require a significant transfer outlay and salary, with the 33-year-old under contract through June 2021. A loan move is always a possibility, too.
Romero has appeared in 61 matches for Manchester United, with most of his minutes coming in European or cup competitions. His European career began in 2007 with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, and he’s also featured extensively for Serie A side Sampdoria.
On the international stage, Romero has been capped 96 times by Argentina. He was La Albiceleste’s starting goalkeeper at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
