Let the coaching rumors begin.
After parting ways with head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto last week, the LA Galaxy are likely to be linked with a number of potential, and high-profile, candidates for the job. One of the first and most prominent is Robbie Keane.
According to ESPN's James Olley, the Galaxy have approached Keane over their head coaching vacancy. Currently, longtime MLS coach Dominic Kinnear is the interim manager of the club with two games remaining in the regular season.
Keane made 125 regular season appearances for the Galaxy and 21 more in the postseason, helping the club win MLS Cup in 2011, 2012 and 2014. He was also Landon Donovan MLS MVP in 2014, as well as MVP of MLS Cup 2014, a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution. The Irishman had 83 goals and 45 assists during the regular season, plus nine goals and five assists in the playoffs.
The 40-year-old has been an assistant coach with the Irish national team as well as English club Middlesbrough. He also spent time as the player/manager of Indian club ATK.
Earlier this summer, Keane admitted he would love to manage the Galaxy one day.
"Down the line, yes absolutely," Keane said on the podcast Kickin' Off with Kevin Egan this summer. "LA Galaxy is a team that, as you know, I absolutely love. The people there are great. The country itself I love, my family loved it there. My little lad was born there, Hudson. It’s certainly a place that means a lot to me. I’ve been there for five-and-a-half years. I would. Of course, why not?"
