Toronto FC have already had a busy offseason, but it turns out their work was far from done with last week's signing of US national team striker Jozy Altidore. The Reds have one-upped themselves by reportedly inking Juventus and Italian national team attacker Sebastian Giovinco, with the unveiling set for early next week.
John Molinaro of Sportsnet.ca was the first to get to the news, with several othersources confirming shortly thereafter:
Known as La Formica Atomica (The Atomic Ant), the diminutive Giovinco would join TFC in July once the summer transfer window opens. The long-time Juventus man has scored 40 Serie A goals in his career, with his best single-season tally of 15 coming in 2011/12 while on loan with Parma. He parlayed that form into a regular role with the Italian national team, picking up 21 caps since 2011 and scoring one goal while representing his country in 2012 European Championship and 2013 Confederations Cup.
He has not been so prolific this year, falling down the depth chart in Turin and failing to register a goal in league play across six appearances – though he did have a brace in his single Coppa Italia run-out. Giovinco, 27, had been linked to Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea last month.
No word from Toronto FC on the reports, but the team has scheduled a "major player signing announcement" for Monday at 1 pm ET.
