NYCFC opened their MLS is Back Tournament slate against co-Group A favorite Philadelphia July 9 a day after dark horse Fire FC met Nashville SC.
Balancing the Concacaf Champions League and the start of the regular season, NYCFC were goalless in a pair of 1-0 defeats to the Columbus Crew and Toronto FC, while Fire FC rebounded from a tough road defeat to defending MLS Cup champion Seattle to draw the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium.
