The Portland Timbers are seeking a fourth consecutive victory when they take on the Colorado Rapids at Providence Park Saturday night.

The Timbers (7W-4L-3D) are coming off a 1-0 "road" win against the Vancouver Whitecaps to remain even on points with Seattle atop the Western Conference, while the Rapids have won two straight games, including a 5-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.

The teams shared the points twice last year, playing to a 3-3 draw at Dick's Sporting Goods Park last March and 2-2 at Providence Park last July.

Giovanni Savarese rotated his squad, but the result was the same as the previous two games with the Timbers beating the Whitecaps 1-0 at Providence Park Sunday night. Felipe Mora scored the lone goal in the 5th minute, heading in an Eryk Williamson free kick. Portland have outscored the opposition 8-1 in the last three wins, part of a four-match unbeaten streak.

But the Timbers haven't reached their peak yet.

“Our standard, our desire is to always improve,” Savarese said after the match. “It’s always to be a strong team and to make sure that we grow and evolve in so many areas to always be a better team. But that doesn’t take away the fact that the guys did a tremendous job today, that they all worked together – they’ve been doing that for the past few games. We defended with everything that we had, we attacked with quality in the first half, with counters in the second.

“We’re very content with the result, but we have high standards. We want to continue to improve, we want to continue to be better. If we’re very good with the ball, we can always be a little bit better. But we cannot take away the fact that the guys did a fantastic job to get a very deserved win today.”

The Rapids’ match against Sporting Kansas City originally scheduled for September 27, at Dick's Sporting Goods Park was postponed to a later date. The decision to postpone the match was made after the Rapids confirmed four positive COVID-19 cases on Friday—three staff members and one player.

On Monday, Major League Soccer confirmed one additional Rapids player and seven more members of the club’s staff received confirmed positive tests for COVID-19.
