Stage 2 of the MLS Re-Entry Draft passed relatively quietly, with only two teams making selections on Thursday.
Orlando City SC selected ex-New England Revolution defender Kevin Alston with the seventh pick in the draft, while the Portland Timbers chose former Houston Dynamo center back Jermaine Taylor with the 20th selection. None of the other 18 teams made a pick.
Orlando and Portland are required by the league to make a genuine offer to their selected player by next Thursday, Dec. 24. In the event that an agreement cannot be reached between drafting club and the player, the drafting club will hold the right of first refusal for that player in MLS.
Alston, 27, played seven seasons in New England after being drafted by the club in 2009. He made 155 career regular season appearances for the Revs, seeing the field in 17 matches and starting 10 games in 2015. Alston missed a large chunk of the 2013 season while battling leukemia.
A longtime veteran of the Jamaican national team, Taylor spent the last five seasons in Houston. The 30-year-old center back made 106 regular season appearances for the Dynamo, helping Houston to appearances in MLS Cup in 2011 and 2012. He made 16 MLS appearances, all starts, in 2015.
In total, just four players were selected in the Re-Entry process, with FC Dallas nabbing forward Maximiliano Urruti and Sporting Kansas City selecting goalkeeper Alec Kann last week in Stage 1.
Re-Entry eligible players who were not selected are now available to any MLS Club on a first come, first serve basis. The full list of players who were eligible for Re-Entry can be found here.
