It was always a matter of when, not if.
17-year-old American Giovanni Reyna scored his first career Bundesliga goal and the first of Borussia Dortmund's 2020-2021 campaign on Saturday, helping his side to a 3-0 home win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
Just beyond the half-hour mark, Reyna played a give-and-go with Jude Bellingham, then drove an excellent finish into the bottom left corner from a tight angle. Erling Haland added two goals from the penalty spot in a comfortable win for last year's league runners-up.
Reyna's goal came in his third Bundesliga start and 16th appearance since joining the first-team squad during last season's winter break. Previously, the former New York City FC academy player and US youth international had scored four goals with the club's U-19 side.
The goal is Reyna's third with the first team in all competitions, with the others coming in the DFB Pokal, or German Cup.
Reyna could make his debut for the senior US national team when aim to play a pair of European-based friendlies in November. He was previously called into the full national team in March, before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out a pair of friendly matches before they could be played.
