After making inroads to the first team last season, Dortmund attacker and former New York City FC academy player Giovanni Reyna appears plenty eager to build on that success.
The 17-year-old American continued a strong Bundesliga preseason on Saturday when he scored Dortmund's third consecutive opening goal in a friendly against second-tier MSV Duisburg.
After working into the first team at last season's winter break, Reyna made 18 appearances in all competitions before the season concluded. He scored a stunning first professional goal in Dortmund's 3-2 domestic cup defeat to Werder Bremen, but has yet to break through in a league encounter.
It will surely come sooner than later if the son of former US men's national team star Claudio Reyna can push his way into the starting XI with a strong preseason. He got the starting nod in Dortmund's final two matches of last season.
Dortmund open the new Bundesliga campaign on Sept. 19 against Borussia Mochengladbach.
