New York Red Bulls vs. New York City FC
RED BULL ARENA, Harrison, N.J.
August 9, 2015 (MLS Game #233)
7 pm ET (Fox Sports 1)
The third New York derby kicks off with real playoff implications as the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC meet Sunday evening at Red Bull Arena before a FOX Sports 1 audience. The Red Bulls have won both previous meetings, winning once at each ground. The Red Bulls come into the match holding down second place in the Eastern Conference, following their 1-1 draw at the MontrÈal Impact at midweek, while NYCFC sit four points out of sixth place and the final postseason position following their 3-2 home loss to the same MontrÈal club last weekend.
- Dax McCarty made it five assists in a three-game stretch when he recorded an assist in the Red Bulls’ 3-1 win against Philadelphia Union at the weekend. McCarty’s six assists this season are one short of his single-season career-high, set in 2007 with FC Dallas.
- David Villa netted his 13th goal of the season – tied for second in the MLS Golden Boot standings, two behind Columbus Crew SC’s Kei Kamara – but NYCFC suffered a 3-2 loss to the Montréal Impact on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Villa has 11 goals and two assists in the last 10 games, dating back to May 30.
- Frank Lampard made his NYCFC and MLS debuts in the loss to the Impact, coming on for the final 21 minutes as a substitute, while Andrea Pirlo made his first start since coming to the club.
- The teams are meeting for the third time this season, and the Red Bulls have won the first two. In the first ever matchup between the cross-river rivals, Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a pair of goals to lead the Red Bulls to a 2-1 win May 10 at Red Bull Arena; Wright-Phillips scored again early in the second half to start a three-goal burst as the Red Bulls came from behind for a 3-1 win June 28 at Yankee Stadium.
