New York City FC announced the signing of Colombian midfielder Javier Calle on Friday, providing coach Jason Kreis with another useful weapon as he prepares his squad for their inaugural MLS season.
A former Colombian youth international, Calle arrives on a season-long loan agreement with an option to purchase after most recently playing for Independiente Medellín in his home country. He is set to join his new teammates in Manchester, England, as they continue their preseason preparations, and will be added to the 2015 roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
“We are very pleased to bring Javier on board. He is a left-footed, versatile and creative player who I believe will adapt well to MLS and give us some different options in midfield,” Kreis told NYCFC.com. “He has impressed both at club and international level and we are confident that he will continue to develop with us in New York.”
Calle, 23, scored six goals in 13 regular-season appearances as Independiente Medellín reached the final of the 2014 Colombian Clausura tournament. He made his debut for the club as a 17-year-old in 2009.
