New York City FC's David Villa named MLS Player of the Week after masterful outing vs. Montreal Impact

Spanish in position: Villa nets another POTW nod after NYCFC win

New York City FC forward David Villa has been voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters for Week 15 of the 2015 MLS season after notching a goal and an assist in NYCFC's impressive 3-1 win over the Montreal Impact on Saturday.

The NYCFC captain secured his second Player of the Week nod on the heels of his finest MLS performance to date, recording his team-leading fourth goal, an assist and seven shots. The Spaniard joins Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco and New York Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips as the only players to win multiple POTW honors so far this season.

Villa opened the scoring for NYCFC in the 31st minute, capping off a beautiful passing sequence by his teammates with a perfectly timed run through a trio of Montreal defenders, finishing a feed from Mehdi Ballouchy from 12-yards out.

Montreal pulled within one goal late in the match, but Villa helped ice the game in the 90th minute by delivering an assist on Kwadwo Poku’s first MLS goal. Villa made a run down the left flank and curled a cross in behind two Impact defenders for the Ghanaian to slot past Evan Bush, securing NYCFC’s second straight win.

New York City FC return to MLS action on Saturday, when they visit Toronto FC at BMO Field (7 pm ET, MLS LIVE).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
