Tom Glick has been appointed president of New York City FC, the club announced on Thursday.
An American with significant experience in minor league baseball and the NBA, Glick spent four years as president and CEO of Derby County before serving as the chief commercial and operating officer at Manchester City, a post he has held since 2012. He will now be responsible for all aspects of the New York City FC organization on a daily basis.
“This role for this club is arguably one of the most exciting in soccer right now," Glick said in a club statement. "I am thrilled to take up the responsibility and the challenge. After two years of laying the foundations for this inaugural season and beyond, we have an incredibly talented team both on and off the pitch. I very much look forward to playing my part in leading and supporting them as we embark on the next and most important stage of our development.”
In the US, Glick worked his way up the baseball industry from interning for minor-league teams in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Jamestown, New York to working as a senior vice president of highly successful AAA club, the Sacramento River Cats. He moved to the NBA league office in 2004 as vice president for team marketing and business development, then served as vice president and chief marketing officer of the New Jersey Nets from 2006-07.
New York City FC chief business officer Tim Pernetti, the former athletic director at Rutgers University, who had overseen the club's operations since 2013, will leave the organization after the first game of the 2015 MLS season to accept a position as president of multimedia for WME | IMG's college business.
“With college sports being my true passion and such a core part of my make-up, this awesome opportunity to join the team at WME | IMG was impossible to refuse, particularly at this natural exit point as New York City FC embarks on the next stage of its development," Pernetti said in the club statement. "It has been my honor and a true privilege to work with the best in the soccer business and to be part of building the foundation of New York City FC. I will be a fan for life.”
New York City FC will kick off their inaugural MLS campaign on March 8, taking on expansion rival Orlando City (5 pm ET on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes), and will play their home opener at Yankee Stadium on March 15 against the New England Revolution (5 pm ET on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes).
