New England Revolution attacker Cristian Penilla underwent successful surgery to repair a left foot fracture on Wednesday and will miss the rest of the regular season, the club announced on Wednesday.

Penilla suffered the injury during the Revs' 2-1 win over New York City FC on Oct. 11, and is expected to need 2-3 months to recover from the injury.

The 29-year-old Ecuador international joined the Revs from Liga MX side C.F. Pachuca ahead of the 2018 season. He's been a solid performer for the club, scoring 18 goals, and 19 assists across 80 appearances in league play.

Penilla had a 12-goal, seven-assist campaign in his debut MLS season of 2018 before putting up six goals and eight assists in 30 games last season. He appeared in 17 games for New England in 2020, starting 10 of them and had yet to find the scoresheet this season, although he did dish out a team-leading four assists in 962 minutes.
