Zack Steffen, the No. 2 at Manchester City and formerly of the Columbus Crew who has featured in both of Pep Guardiola’s side’s Carabao Cup matches, is the heir apparent and has made 17 appearances for the USMNT.
Matt Turner of the New England Revolution has arguably been the best shot-stopper in Major League Soccer this season and, according to Doyle, should be the clear choice.
Doyle: Why Turner over Steffen for the US
After registering his career-best sixth clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Nashville SC Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, Turner weighed in on the debate.
“Listen, people are going to talk. It’s nice to be in that conversation,” Turner told reporters in a video conference call. “The reality is I know I still have a ton to prove in this league, I still have bigger aspirations, and I’ve never even played a game for the national team yet. Those are things that are in my list of goals and that are on my radar, but people can talk. Like I said, it’s nice to be in the conversation, but I know I still have a lot of work to do.”
