A critical match in the chase for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference is ahead when the Montreal Impact entertain Philadelphia Union at Stade Saputo on Saturday evening. The Impact return to league action after seeing their undefeated run ended in a 1-0 home loss to D.C. United two weeks ago, now in a tie for sixth place and the final playoff place in the conference. Union saw their current winless run stretched to five games last weekend, the Chicago Fire hitting late for a 3-3 draw at PPL Park that left Philadelphia four points behind the playoff line.
- The Impact return to league play after a weekend away, their three-game undefeated streak coming to an an end in a 1-0 home loss to D.C. United on Aug. 8. The Impact also reached a 2-2 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the first leg of the Canadian Championship at Stade Saputo in between.
- Union saw their winless run stretched to five games with a second consecutive draw in cruel fashion, the Chicago Fire scoring a late equalizer after Sebastien Le Toux had put Union ahead with a 90th-minute goal, leaving the teams in a 3-3 tie Sunday afternoon at PPL Park. Just five days earlier, Le Toux scored the lone goal of the game to give Union a 1-0 win against the Fire in their U.S. Open Cup semifinal.
- The teams are meeting for the second time this season. They reached a 2-2 draw June 27 at PPL Park.
- The visiting team has never won in the all-time series between the teams. The Impact have won all four meetings between the teams at Stade Saputo, including a 1-0 victory last April 26 in the only encounter in Montreal. Union have won two of the five matchups at PPL Park, with three draws.
