It was another matchday in the UEFA Champions League group stage and another chance for American and Canadian exports to shine on the world’s stage.
A day after five USMNT players featured in the competition on the same day for the first time, here's what transpired on Wednesday.
Red Bull Salzburg 2, Lokomotiv Moscow 2
Former New York Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch led Red Bull Salzburg into their first group stage match against Lokomotiv Moscow in Group A, coming away with a 2-2 draw after yielding a late equalizer.
RB Salzburg fell behind 1-0 after conceding the opener in the 19th minute, but put themselves back in the driver's set with a pair of strikes from Dominik Szoboszlai and Zlatko Junuzovic in the 45th and 50th minutes. They couldn't quite see out the one-goal lead, as Moscow struck back with an equalizer from Vitaly Lisakovich in the 75th minute. They play their next group stage match against Atletico Madrid on Oct. 27.
Marsch, who helped lead RB Salzburg to the Austrian double last year, has his side flying out of the gate with a perfect 4W-0L-0D record to open the Austrian Bundesliga campaign. A year ago, Salzburg finished third in their group behind Liverpool and Napoli and then lost to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League Round of 32.
Bayern Munich 4, Atletico Madrid 0
Also in Group A, Canadian international and former Vancouver Whitecaps standout Alphonso Davies came off the bench in the 83rd minute as defending champions Bayern Munich opened their title defense with a 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid at Allianz Arena.
Former FC Dallas defender Chris Richards wasn't included in the matchday squad for the defending European champs.
Manchester City 3, Porto 1
Also starting the match on the bench on the day was USMNT goalkeeper and former Columbus Crew SC star Zack Steffen for Manchester City's Group C opener against Porto at the Etihad Stadium. Unlike Davies, he didn't enter the match.
Man City were dealt an early scare when they fell behind 1-0 in the 14th minute, but bounced back in short order, with an equalizing penalty kick from Sergio Aguero just six minutes later. They would take control after that, getting two more goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres in a 3-1 victory.
