Inter Miami starting goalkeeper and captain Luis Robles has suffered a fracture in his left arm, the team announced Sunday afternoon.
Robles suffered in the injury in stoppage time of Miami's 3-2 loss to New York City FC on Saturday night when he collided with Gary Mackay-Steven, a play that resulted in a yellow card for the NYCFC player. The club added that Robles would undergo further evaluation by team doctors over the next 48 hours.
The 36-year-old Robles has been ever-present in goal for Miami in their expansion season, starting all 15 of their games to date. The long-time New York Red Bull is known for his durability, and holds the MLS record for most consecutive games played, appearing in every minute of 183 straight regular-season contests between Sept. 2012 and May 2018.
Though they will be losing their captain and one of the most experienced players in the league, there are plenty of potential candidates to take the armband on a roster that features several experienced players, include French World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi and Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain. Between the pipes, former Philadelphia 'keeper John McCarthy has backed up Robles in all of Miami's games this season and so looks to be the favorite to replace him, while 22-year-old Drake Callender will likely slot into the backup role if needed.
