Over three years after he was released by FC Dallas, Josh Lambo has finally latched on with another professional football club.
American football, that is.
The eighth-overall pick in the 2008 SuperDraft, Lambo, 24, signed with the NFL’s San Diego Chargers on Saturday. A former US Under-17 and Under-20 national team goalkeeper, Lambo spent four ill-fated seasons with FCD, breaking his jaw in his rookie year and never making a league appearance for the club before being released after the 2011 season.
He ditched soccer for football after an unsuccessful trial with D.C. United in the 2012 preseason, enrolling at Texas A&M University that fall and joining their football team as a placekicker. He started for the Aggies the last two years, going 20-24 on field goal attempts and 105-106 on extra points in his college career.
Lambo, who will begin offseason workouts with the Chargers next week, isn’t the only high-profile kicker with an MLS connection. Houston Dynamo midfielder Nate Sturgis’ younger brother Caleb has been the Miami Dolphins kicker since 2013, and former Columbus Crew, D.C. United, San Jose Earthquakes and Tampa Bay Mutiny forward Devin Barclay kicked for Ohio State University in 2009 and 2010.
