FRISCO, Tex. -- FC Dallas scored their fastest goal in franchise history with Fabian Castillo putting one home just 29 seconds into Saturday’s match against Toronto FC. Nearly five-and-a-half hours later, they also earned the win.
In a game delayed 206 minutes due to the weather, FC Dallas (4-2-1) rode a first-half brace from Castillo to a 3-2 victory over Toronto FC at Toyota Stadium, withstanding a late rally from the visitors to snap a two-game losing streak.
Sebastian Giovinco scored two dazzling goals in the second half for Toronto (1-4-0), who have lost four straight.
The fireworks got started early with Castillo scoring in the first minute of the game with Moises Hernandez getting the assist with a perfect pass.
Castillo scored his second just nine minutes later as Blas Perez found Castillo with a through ball and the speedy winger delivered.
In the 27th minute, Perez then took advantage of a Toronto turnover to score one of his own, beating goalkeeper Joe Bendik after defenders Damien Perquis and Justin Morrow collided into each other.
The three goals marked the most scored by FC Dallas in the first half of a match since September of 2008.
Before the game reached halftime, though, it was delayed in the 42nd minute because of a lightning strike. When the game finally resumed at 11:42 local time – after many failed efforts due to subsequent lightning strikes – the teams finished out the final three minutes of the first half before going back into the locker room for the normal halftime break.
Both teams struggled to get much going in the second half, which began in the early hours of Sunday morning, as Dallas sat back and played defense. Toronto pressed for a chance to get on the scoreboard in the 55th minute, but Dallas center back Matt Hedges cleared a chance off the line.
Toronto finally broke through in the 83rd minute when Giovinco made an incredible play to keep possession near the end line before beating goalkeeper Chris Seitz with a clever tough-angle chip.
Giovinco, who nearly scored another just three minutes later with a shot that went just wide, then made it 3-2 in the 89th minute with an exquisite free kick from just outside the box.
But the visitors didn’t have enough time to find an equalizer.
FC Dallas return to action on Friday against Colorado (10 pm ET, Univision Deportes). Toronto finish up their long road trip to start the season next week with a Sunday game against Orlando (7 pm ET, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes).
