Andrea Pirlo became the second member of New York City FC's inaugural 2015 roster to join the European managerial ranks on Saturday after he was named as the new manager at Juventus.
Pirlo's appointment follows Juve's disappointing exit from the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16 at the hands of Olympique Lyonnais on Friday night, which resulted in the dismissal of Maurizio Sarri.
The managerial post is Pirlo's first at the first-team level, after he previously led the Juventus U-23 side. He joins fellow former NYCFC midfielder Frank Lampard — currently at the helm at Chelsea — as a boss of a major European club.
Juventus was Pirlo's last Italian club during a playing career that began at Brescia and went on to both Milan clubs and Reggiana. He then went to NYCFC, where he played three seasons, making 60 MLS appearances while contributing a goal and 18 assists.
