More Powers to you? Reading extend trial for Rapids midfielder

Dillon Powers - Colorado Rapids

Colorado Rapids midfielder Dillon Powers has earned at least another week on trial with English Championship club Reading, GetReading.co.uk reported Tuesday.

Powers, the 2013 MLS Rookie of the Year, has been on trial with Reading since the second week of November. Royals manager Steve Clarke confirmed that Powers will continue to train with the club, while right back Kevin Foley will not.

“It will be a decision for January," Clarke said. "It can’t be done until then, so we’ll continue to look at Dillon in training. So far he’s done well."

Powers signed a multi-year contract extension with the Rapidsin the fall of 2014 but holds an Italian passport (thus avoiding the need to request a work permit).

Clarke described the Rapids midfielder as more of an offensive player. Reading already have US international Danny Williams, coincidentally a defensive midfielder, on their roster. Reading are currently seventh in the Championship, just one point out of the promotion-playoff spots and eight points out of first place.

The Rapids have transferred both Deshorn Brown and Shane O'Neill to European clubs in 2015, and Bravo said earlier this month that the club will support Powers' wishes.

“If a young man has a dream and you’ve been there along with him, you’ve got to share in that dream,” Bravo said, at the time. “From Day 1, [Powers] has been very clear with his intentions. He’s a very sharp young man and has everything thought though. Europe is something that he would like to experience.”
