DC United midfielder Edison Flores out 4-6 weeks with facial fractures

D.C. Designated Player Edison Flores out with facial fractures

Edison Flores - DC United - August 21, 2020

D.C. United's injury woes have worsened after head coach Ben Olsen provided an update on the status of star attacker Edison Flores.

Flores exited D.C.'s loss to the New England Revolution on Tuesday after being involved in a head-on-head collision. Flores will undergo plastic surgery on August 31 to repair multiple facial fractures and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, the club announced.

“Flores is not available," Olsen told reporters on a video conference call a few hours before the news was officially announced. "He’s had some scans, we think he has some fracturing in and around his left eye. We’re going to continue to get opinions on that and what the next steps are with Eddy. Our thoughts are with him. It’s not an ideal situation with him, but he’s comfortable. He’s going to be sidelined for a bit.”

Flores, 26, joined United this winter from Liga MX's Morelia with big expectations as a Designated Player. Still settling into life in MLS, Flores has yet to register a goal or assist across six appearances in 2020.

United have struggled out of the gates this year but they have picked up enough points—seven points after six games—that sees them in the mix for a playoff place in the Eastern Conference.
