D.C. United hostsed a roundtable discussion on Thursday about the intersection of gender, sexual orientation and sports.
The event was streamed on Twitter and Facebook, and includes former Homegrown midfielder Collin Martin. An openly gay soccer player, Martin now plays for San Diego Loyal in the USL Championship after making 41 appearances during seven seasons with D.C. and Minnesota United.
Also on the panel was Rory Molleda, D.C.’s team administration director who struck up quite the friendship with Wayne Rooney. Others included Lilli Barrett-O’Keefe, the North America director at streetfootballworld, and Sheila Alexander-Reid, director of the Mayor's Office of LGBTQ affairs.
Pride Month occurs each June in the United States in memory of the Stonewall riots and to celebrate inclusion. That story was the subject of an episode of The Movement last year.
