D.C. United are sitting on top of the Eastern Conference, but they’re not standing pat. The team announced on Monday that they’ve signed Argentinian forward/midfielder Facundo Coria, bolstering an attacking corps that’s been without star forward Fabian Espindola for the bulk of the 2015 season thus far.
Coria, a free agent who was eligible to sign with D.C. outside the international transfer window, will become available following receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
“We are pleased to welcome Facundo to D.C. United,” United general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement released by the club. “He is a talented player who is in the prime of his career, and he will provide us with another quality attacking option.”

The 27-year-old Coria has spent most of his career in his native Argentina, most recently with Argentinos Juniors during the 2013-14 season. He previously played with the same club during the 2009-10 season, a breakout campaign in which he scored five goals in 33 appearances.
Coria played in 16 of 19 games during the 2010 Clausura championship, scoring four goals en route to helping the club capture its first major title since 1985. He scored the decisive goal in Argentinos Juniors’ 2-1 away win against Huracán on the last day of the season to secure the title.
The following year, Coria was sold to Villarreal of the Spanish La Liga before joining Mexican side Pachuca on loan in 2011. He has also played with Argentinian side Club Estudiantes and Chilean side Colo Colo. He began his career with Velez Sarsfield and has also played for Arsenal de Sarandi and Ecuadorian club Emelec.
Coria was on trial with the Philadelphia Union earlier in the spring, but did not earn a roster spot.
