UConn forward Cyle Larin was busy with Canada Under-20 national team obligations and couldn't attend the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, but he still enjoyed his special moment.
In Jamaica for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, Larin watched the SuperDraft online on Thursday to learn his fate. He wound up being taken by Orlando City with the first overall pick, and was congratulated quite spectacularly by his elated and rambunctious teammates.
Unfortunately for Larin, the rest of the day did not go as well. The 19-year-old forward and Canada were on the losing end of a 3-2 thriller to El Salvador, with Larin seeing a rebounded shot ricochet off him and into the path of El Salvador midfielder Romilio Hernandez for the game's decisive tally deep into stoppage time.
Being taken at No. 1 is still a neat consolation prize.
