Carr: Depth is why Union sit atop Shield standings

Sergio Santos - Philadelphia Union - October 24, 2020

The Philadelphia Union sit atop the Supporters' Shield standings with just three games remaining. On Extratime, Calen Carr attributes their success to their roster building.

"I still think what separates this Philly team from so many other teams in MLS this year and what gives them, I think, a real chance to potentially do the double is that they are so deep," Carr said. "The depth of this roster, the way they've constructed this roster is insane."

For Carr, that depth truly showed itself off in the Union's 5-0 win against fellow Shield contender Toronto FC over the weekend, when the team was already up five goals and only then brought on Ilsinho and an in-form Anthony Fontana to do more damage. The impressive win against Toronto is just one sign of a Union squad boasting a mix of youth and experience that Carr thinks will come in handy in the home stretch of the regular season.

"This team is perfectly situated, especially for a year like this where depth is tested, youth is tested, the experience of Alejandro Bedoya — they really have everything going for them," Carr said. "With three games left, two of which are at home — they're the only MLS team undefeated at home right now — they are the odds on favorite for the Supporters' Shield."
