Dwayne De Rosario is hanging up his boots.
In an Instagram post Sunday evening, the legendary Canadian international announced he will be taking a role as an ambassador with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, who own Toronto FC and are De Rosario’s hometown team where he played on two different stops during his 18-year career.
Widely considered the best attacker to ever suit up for the Canadian national team, De Rosario is the all-time leading scorer for the Canucks (22) and also TFC (28). He also won four MLS Cup titles, the 2011 MLS Most Valuable Player award and is a four-time Canadian player of the year. He was named to seven MLS All-Star teams, six Best XIs and netted 104 goals in 343 games in his 13-year career in Major League Soccer, which started when he joined the San Jose Earthquakes in 2001.
It was at the end of that first season when he first established himself as a big-game player, upon netting the game-winning goal in San Jose's 2-1 MLS Cup win over the LA Galaxy. He also got the match-winner in 2007, when he led the Houston Dynamo to their second-straight Cup victory.
De Rosario, who also played for D.C. United and New York Red Bulls, finished his career with TFC last season and scored goals in each of his last two appearances with the national team, both coming against Iceland in January.
