Alvaro Saborio has extended his stay in D.C.
D.C. United announced on Tuesday that the Costa Rican international – who arrived in the nation’s capital in a July trade from Real Salt Lake – has agreed to a contract extension with the club. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Saborio, 33, scored four goals in 12 regular season games after arriving in D.C., giving him seven goals in 27 total regular season appearances with United and RSL last year. His most notable tally for United came on Oct. 2, when he scored the winner against New York City FC to clinch D.C.’s spot in the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs.
“We are pleased to have reached an agreement to retain Sabo for the 2016 season,” D.C. general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement released by the club. “He made an immediate impact when he joined us this summer and scored important goals down the stretch. We look forward to his continued contributions.”
Saborio has been one of the most prolific forwards in MLS since he joined Salt Lake in 2010, scoring 67 goals and notching 13 assists in 139 career regular season appearances. A longtime veteran of the Costa Rican national team, he has 35 goals in 103 matches for Los Ticos. He most recently lined up for his country on Friday, when he started Costa Rica’s 1-0 World Cup qualifying win against Haiti. Saborio and Costa Rica will resume qualifying on Tuesday, when they’ll take on Panama on the road.
