New Chicago Fire Designated Player David Accam and Ghana are headed to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations after they beat South Africa 2-1 on Tuesday in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea.
It was an 83rd-minute Andre Ayew header that proved to be the winning goal to give the Black Stars the top spot in Group C, although Accam didn’t see action.
South Africa were unable to hold onto a 1-0 lead after a 17th-minute goal by Mandia Masango. Ghana’s John Boye equalized in the 73rd minute.
In the other game of the night, being played simultaneously, Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi outdueled former Colorado Rapids and New York Red Bulls ‘keeper Bouna Coundoul, leading Algeria to a 2-0 win over Senegal in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
Riyad Mahrez and Nabil Bentaleb scored the goals for Algeria, giving them second place in Group C and a trip to the quarterfinals of the knockout stages.
